PageSpeed Metrics Explained
FCP (First Contentful Paint)
What it measures: How long it takes for the browser to paint the first piece of content (like text or an image) on the screen.
Why it matters: It’s the user’s first visual confirmation that something is happening, a fast FCP makes your site feel responsive.
Good target: < 1.8 seconds
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)
What it measures: How much visible content shifts around unexpectedly while the page is loading.
Why it matters: Layout shifts (like buttons jumping while you try to click) are annoying and hurt user experience.
Good target: < 0.1 (lower is better)
Speed Index
What it measures: How quickly most of the page’s visible content appears as it loads.
Why it matters: It shows how smooth and fast the loading experience feels overall, not just the first element.
Good target: < 3.4 seconds
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)
What it is: The time it takes for the largest visible element (usually a hero image, video, or big text block) to finish loading.
Why it matters: It signals when the main part of your page is ready and usable.
Good score: Under 2.5s
Total Blocking Time (TBT)
What it is: The total time between FCP and full interactivity when the main thread is blocked by heavy scripts.
Why it matters: Long blocking times make your site feel laggy, clicks, taps, and scrolls get delayed while the browser is “busy.”
Good score: Under 200 ms
